Martial Arts Near Me – What Is Wing Chun?
What is Wing Chun Kung Fu? If you haven’t heard of Wing Chun before you probably don’t know much about. The style of Wing Chun has been made more popular by Bruce Lee in the 1970’s and has also with the advent of the Ip Man movies which were based on the life of Wing Chun’s modern day founder Ip Man.
Wing Chun is a simple close range martial art which focuses on straight line attacks and low kicks. Because of the unique training method in Wing Chun called Chi Sau (sticky hands), students can learn quite quickly. In chi sau, both practitioners link arms and attempt to uproot their partner or land an attack, while also maintaining their defence.
This becomes a strategic game which is very intuitive and allows you to instinctively move according to the movements of your partner/attacker. The theory of the game of chi sau is based around controlling the centreline and gaining a centreline advantage over your partner. You will also learn to understand connection to the ground and generating power through relaxation.
Martial Arts Near Me – The Instructor
The chief instructor at Leeds Ip Man Wing Chun is Tim Halloran who has been studying Wing Chun for over 2 decades. Tim initially began training Wing Chun in the early 90’s with Colin Ward; a senior Ip Chun representative. More recently Tim has studied with instructor Daniel Parr from the Chu Shong Tin lineage and he travels to Sheffield regularly for classes. Both Ip Chun and Chu Shong Tin were Ip Man’s students and both had a slightly different focus in their teachings.
In particular Chu Shong Tin changed his teaching methods towards the end of his life to focus more fully on internal aspects of the system. This video explains the evolution of Chu Shong Tin’s teaching:
