Not everyone is looking for children’s classes, some people are looking for “martial arts near me for adults”! If that’s you, look no further! Wing Chun is particularly suitable for adults of all ages. Unlike many sport related martial arts, Wing Chun is a low impact style which is suitable for adults of any age. Providing you are in good health, Wing Chun is beneficial for longevity and teaches relaxation of the body and mind.
Martial Arts Near Me For Adults
Many martial artists come to find Wing Chun after years of training another style too. Tae Kwon Do comes to mind because a student recently enrolled in our classes from a Taekwondo background. He is actually a black belt in the style. With Taekwondo, there’s quite a lot of physicality involved with a lot of high kicks and fitness required. In contrast Wing Chun is very low key with only low kicks and most of the training centred around chi sau – a sticky hands drill used for trapping and sensitivity.
Wing Chun is a concept based style principled around economy of motion and minimum movement – perfect for those who aren’t as physically fit as would be needed for a sports oriented style such as Taekwondo or even MMA. That’s not to say we are looking for the unfit! Wing Chun will help you maintain your fitness but it’s considerably less focused on cardiovascular fitness and athleticism that many other styles are. So if you’re looking for cardiovascular fitness, or high kicks, Wing Chun probably isn’t the best fit.
If you want to learn a martial art well, you’re going to need to stick with it for some time. Wing Chun is perfect if you’re an adult because you can practice into old age and it’s low impact.
Chi Sau – The “Heart” of the Wing Chun System
Chi sau is often referred to as the “heart” of the Wing Chun system. To sum up chi sau you could say that it is like putting a fight into a “game” scenario. It’s a little like chess too, where your goal is to land an attack on your partner but without compromising your own defence in the process. Initially in your training you will learn the basic positions of the game of chi sau – tan sau, bong sau and fok sau. After some practice of the drills, you can start to exchange attacks with your partner. You will learn why you are getting hit and how to tighten up your defence. It’s here where chi sau becomes very interesting. If you stick with Wing Chun for long enough to “get” this game, it can become incredibly addictive and fun!
In chi sau you are not only learning an effective fighting system, but also having fun while doing so. You learn self control, correct body position, techniques, when to use energy and when not to use it and of course your reaction time will rapidly increase due to having hand on hand connection with a partner.
